Congrats to ‘Sole Survivor,’ Indiewire September’s Project of the Month!

Congratulations to “Sole Survivor” director Ky Dickens. The project received the most votes to win September’s Project of the Month. The prize is a creative consultation from the Tribeca Film Institute.

In the history of aviation, there have been 14 large commercial plane crashes with one lone survivor. Sole Survivor offers the first glimpse into the lives of four of these sole survivors. There’s a misconception that if somebody survives a tragedy, they should feel lucky. Pressure is placed on survivors to move on, to feel grateful for being spared a dire fate without acknowledging the psychological, social, emotional, spiritual and physical ramifications of survival. Through their varying experiences yet similar reflections, Sole Survivor puts a face on survivorship, underscoring the fact that survivors are victims too.

Our team has just launched our final kickstarter campaign, showcasing never before released scenes from SOLE SURVIVOR.

Detroit — Cecilia Cichan was 4 when she was rescued from the wreckage of a Northwest Airlines jet crash near Metro Airport on Aug. 16, 1987. The airliner crashed shortly after takeoff, killing 156 people and leaving Cichan the sole survivor. Cichan is talking about the crash for the first time in a new documentary called “Sole Survivor” scheduled to be completed in August. The film tells 14 tales of sole survivorship. Read on…

“Three decades later lone survivor of Reno tragedy shares story”

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Almost 27 years later, George Lamson, Jr. returned to Minnesota on Tuesday to assist in the making of a documentary about his luck and misfortune a thousand miles away. Lamson was the sole survivor of the January 21, 1985 airplane crash in Reno, Nevada. 64 people, almost all Minnesotans, died in the mishap. Read on…

Diving into Post-Production

After two years of shooting came together in a room at Foundation Content in Los Angeles. Editor Anna Patel and Director Ky Dickens worked approximately 15 hours a day, for 8 days straight, in order to reduce 270 hours of footage into the film’s 90 minute rough cut. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Our deepest gratitude to all who came out to the Sole Survivor Film fundraiser last night. Your support salutes grassroots projects, women in film and propelled us one step closer to sharing sole survivors’ stories with the world. Ky’s headed to LA on Saturday to start editing with Anna Patel, thanks to all of you. And thanks to the film’s masterful, steadfast, visionary team who made it all happen. Behind any great project is a great producer and we have FOUR of them. And Farmhouse Chicago, Vertigo Sky Lounge, Trés Awesome and Magic Hat Brewing Company – thanks for the fierce, yummy love.

One of the highlights of last night, was sharing memories and conversations with loved ones from the American Eagle, Flight 4181 community. The journeys of victims’ families are the most inspiring aspect of this project. Healing, hope, triumph, learning, love, strength & forgiveness are themes that are universal. Thank you for your witness, your testimonies, your memories. Meeting each and every person who has endured and continued onward is an immeasurable gift.

We are beyond grateful for such a supportive and compassionate community of artists, partners, friends, activists, healers, fans and colleagues. ♥
